“The slowdown in the grape market is putting negative pressure on prices”

Since Christmas, the grape market has completely turned around. “It’s also not a big surprise, because everyone saw the current volumes coming,” says Anthony Rijnbeek of Origin Fruit Group, based in Rotterdam. “It is clear that the grape market is currently under pressure, especially after the quieter than usual weeks that have just passed, with Christmas and New Year falling in the middle of the week. »

“Before Christmas, the market experienced serious shortages, which is no longer on the agenda for the coming period. There are many arrivals from South Africa and Namibia and, at the same time, Peru continues to load well from Ica, while the season from Piura is coming to an end,” said the grape buyer.

“Qualitatively, the grapes are good. In Piura the situation was uncertain at the beginning due to the drought, but I have not noticed any problems so far, although of course the fact that the market has been so strong has contributed to the fact that the grapes flow immediately. I think South African grapes are of better quality today than in previous years. »

“The current higher volume is putting downward pressure on prices of bulk grapes in particular. The prices of white grapes are, depending on the origin and variety, between €16 and €20 for punnets and between €14 and €16 for bulk 4.5 kg. Those of red grapes are similar, with the exception of Red Globe which remain higher, around €23. »

Numerous promotions are therefore planned in the retail sector over the coming weeks. This is a good thing for consumption, because after experiencing shortages at the start of the season, high prices always have an inhibiting effect on purchases. For the coming period, this should no longer be an obstacle! »
