While everyone was sharing wishes, Sam Altman started the year 2025 by sharing a brief reflection raising questions and concerns about the future of AI. In his first tweet of the year, posted Saturday on X, Altman cryptically discussed “the notion of singularity”. This is a concept for when technology becomes so advanced that it is beyond human control. Moreover, it could have potentially devastating consequences for civilization.
Why bring up once again the singularity and the simulation hypothesis?
“I always wanted to write a six-word story,” said Sam Altman in his post, “here it is: near the singularity; it is not clear which side. »
However, minutes later, the tech entrepreneur revealed that even he found his ambiguous message. He clarified that this reflection could also refer to the simulation hypothesis.
“It is assumed that this is either about the simulation assumption or the inability to know when the critical moment of takeoff will actually occur, but I like that it works in many other ways as well,” he wrote.
The “takeoff” would designate the starting point of technological singularity. As for the simulation hypothesis, it assumes that humans live in a computer simulation. This is a theory often perceived as less realistic than the technological singularity, debated more philosophically than scientifically.

As a reminder, OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Sam Altman and several other tech entrepreneurs, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk left the company in 2018, dissatisfied with the direction it was taking and the results it was achieving.
In 2024, he accused OpenAI of working on artificial general intelligence (AGI), a technology that allows a machine to perform every task a human can. Musk claimed that GPT-4, OpenAI’s language model, had reached this stage.
However, OpenAI denied that GPT-4 is an AGI. Nonetheless, Altman recently suggested that this breakthrough could come to fruition in 2025. In a November 8 interview with Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, the latter asked Altman what excited him for 2025.
Altman’s response was simple: “AGI. I’m very excited to do it.”.
