After several months of paralysis of the Canadian Parliament, Justin Trudeau announces his resignation while his party is experiencing an unprecedented political crisis.
Justin Trudeau announces his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada, after spending nearly ten years at the head of the country. “Despite all efforts, Parliament has been paralyzed for months […] “that is why I intend to resign as party leader and prime minister once the party finds a replacement,” he announced this Monday, January 6.
Rumors of resignation have been circulating since Sunday evening after the publication of an article in the daily The Globe and Mail . The Canadian newspaper reported the Prime Minister’s desire to leave office before a crucial meeting of his party scheduled for Wednesday.
Growing unpopularity
This announcement comes less than ten months before the next legislative elections – which will be held in October – and after Justin Trudeau had expressed his intention to run again. But the rise in his unpopularity within his party as well as among Canadians, and a potential economic crisis with Donald Trump’s United States, have pushed him to rethink his place in his country’s politics.
“During the holidays, I had time to reflect with my family. All the success of my career is due to their support”he confided, before assuring with a smile that he “always concerned about Canadians”. “The country deserves a clear and real choice”he asserted with determination.
For several months, the Prime Minister’s popularity has been plummeting in the polls. The favorite place in the hearts of Canadians is now occupied by Pierre Poilièvre, the leader of the conservative party presented as the Canadian Donald Trump, who has 45% of voting intentions in the next legislative elections, compared to 25% for Justin Trudeau.
