Since the end of the one-week truce in November 2023, no new agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas.
A proposal for the release of hostages
Despite mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, indirect negotiations failed to reach a lasting agreement between Israel and the Hamas. However, the recent statement by a Hamas official regarding a possible release of hostages could pave the way for a new agreement. Hamas announced its willingness to release 34 Israeli hostages, including women, children, the sick and the elderly. These prisoners appear on a list provided by Israel.
According to a Hamas representative, this release would be part of a first phase of an exchange of prisoners. However, he clarified that “resistance groups need about a week of calm to communicate with the kidnappers and identify the [otages] dead or alive.“For its part, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that no official list had yet been transmitted by Hamas.
