Jean-Marie Le Pen, the former leader of the far right in , has died at the age of 96. Present in French political life since the mid-1950s, he had revived far-right ideas in France, co-founding the National Front, a party that he bequeathed to his daughter and which today became the National Rally. .

President of the FN for 38 years, five times candidate for the Elysée, several times deputy, he reached the second round of the presidential election in 2002. Throughout his long political career, the far-right leader also been the star of multiple trials, convicted several times, notably for contesting crimes against humanity. The man nicknamed “The Menhir” was definitively excluded in 2015 from the party he helped found and had engaged in internal legal battles to challenge this exclusion. His position as honorary president of the National Front was removed in March 2018, during a congress during which the process of changing the name of the party which is now the National Rally was also recorded.
