The naval arms race has intensified again since 2020, with massive investments in submarine technologies by the main world powers. THE UNITED STATESthe Chine and the Russia particularly compete in the development of new generation nuclear submarines, considered major strategic assets. This technological competition is characterized by the constant search for innovations in terms of stealth, striking power and autonomy.
The flagship of the Russian navy
L’Arkhangelskfourth class submersible Yasen-Mmarks a crucial stage in the evolution of the Russian fleet. Equipped with the latest generation of nuclear propulsion, this building designed by the Malakhit office in Saint Petersburg pushes the limits of underwater stealth. Its sophisticated combat system integrates Kalibr and Oniks cruise missiles, allowing it to engage a wide variety of targets. This versatility, combined with a minimal acoustic signature, makes it a formidable hunter of the deep.
An overhaul of naval power
The shipyard Sevmash is currently deploying all its expertise to realize Russian maritime ambitions. Four new submarines – Perm, Ulyanovsk, Voronezh and Vladivostok – will gradually take their place in the Northern and Pacific fleets. This strategic distribution of forces demonstrates the Russian desire to assert its presence in two major maritime theaters. The program plans, ultimately, the deployment of twelve Yasen-M units, intended to replace the veterans Oscar and Akula.
A carefully orchestrated deployment
The Russian Navy is leaving nothing to chance in the integration of these new submersibles. During a solemn ceremony, Admiral Alexander Moiseyev handed over the flag of St. Andrew to the commander Alexander Gladkovmarking the start of an intensive evaluation phase. L’Arkhangelsk will undergo a battery of diving tests to validate its operational capabilities before its final entry into service. This rigorous process illustrates the technical requirements imposed on these combat ships, which will have to ensure Russian power projection for several decades. Their deployment responds to the new imperatives of modern naval warfare, where the discretion and precision of strikes become decisive.
