A new leader has taken the lead in La Liga for a few weeks: Atlético de Madrid. However, according to Opta’s predictions after 19 days, it is not Atlético who should be crowned champion at the end of the season.
Remember when FC Barcelona had a 60% chance of winning the title? This prospect now seems very distant. Following its defeat against Atlético, Barça is now projected in third place at the end of the season. The Blaugrana could find themselves six points behind Atlético and have five behind Real Madrid. The latter defeated Valencia CF ten to eleven in a late match.
Previously, Real Madrid triumphed against Sevilla FC at the Santiago Bernabeu, thus remaining in the wake of the leader of the Colchoneros. The other contenders for the top 4 responded, with victories for Athletic Bilbao, Girona, Mallorca and Villarreal before the break. Real Sociedad were beaten, while Betis Sevilla were held to a draw by Rayo Vallecano.
Opta has revealed its latest predictions for the start of 2025, and one club clearly appears to stand out to take the title.
