United States: Donald Trump refuses to rule out the idea of forceful annexation of Greenland and the Panama Canal

Donald Trump held a provocative press conference on Tuesday, January 7, from his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, during which he reaffirmed his desire to annex the Panama Canal and Greenland. Asked about the possibility of using armed forces to reclaim the canal and territory, the future president of the United States refused to rule out the idea, reported Le Figaro : “I can’t assure you about either of them.”. According to him, they are “very important for economic security”.

Donald Trump has already stated on several occasions that he wants to take back the Panama Canal, built by the United States and inaugurated in 1914, if the price of tolls for American ships is not reduced. He again castigated on Tuesday the agreement made in 1977 by then-President Jimmy Carter, which resulted in a transfer of control of the canal to Panama in 1999.

Use of “economic force” against Canada

Concerning Greenland, Donald Trump judged just before Christmas that “For national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity”. The head of the Greenlandic government, Mute Egede, cut short, indicating that Greenland is not “not for sale and never will be”. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen continued, stating that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders”.

The future American president also threatened to use “economic strength” against Canada, after having affirmed the day before that it was in the interest of this ally of the United States to become the “51st State” American. Shortly after the announcement of the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, Donald Trump estimated that Canada should “merge” with the United States.
