Gerhard Pfister will step down as chairman of the Center Party this summer. The 62-year-old announced it on Monday during the traditional Epiphany speech – but according to the Zug resident, the decision was taken in the fall. Pfister says:
“After the successful implementation of Strategy 2025, the time has come to pass the baton. Now is the time to make way for new talent and the next generation.
The handover will take place at the delegates’ meeting on June 28, 2025 in Biel, during which the successor will be elected.
Pfister succeeded Christophe Darbellay as president of the former CVP in April 2016. During his term, there was a merger with the BDP, from which the current Center Party emerged. “The opening of the party and the merger was a turning point that brought new opportunities,” Pfister said Monday.
Zuger’s term has been rather successful: in the last national elections in 2023, the center overtook the FDP as the third force in the National Council. The party also established itself as the most powerful force in the Council of States.
For Pfister, his resignation from the party presidency does not mean that he is saying goodbye to politics. The 62-year-old will sit on the National Council until 2027. What happens next remains uncertain. “I will also feel comfortable in other areas of political activity,” Pfister said. A reference to a possible candidacy for the Federal Council? “I will answer this question when it arises,” declared the Zougois in an enigmatic tone.
