The bar wasn’t set very high for the Golden Globes on Sunday night. After the memorable bombing of last year’s host Jo Koy, this year’s host Nikki Glaser couldn’t do much worse. But she didn’t just do better. After working on her opening monologue during dozens of club appearances during the holidays, she killed when it counted, making stars in attendance at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., laugh and winning over network viewers social. The rest of the evening went more or less well, with a mix of expected and surprise winners. But it wouldn’t be an awards show if there weren’t some truly offbeat moments. Here are the highs and lows as we saw them.

Best Host: Nikki Glaser

When Glaser began preparing for her Golden Globes monologue in early December, she told her writing team, “Don’t be afraid to be weird. »

You saw proof of that in her stellar monologue on Sunday, which included the kind of harsh punchlines she’s known for, including a good insult about Paramount+ and a joke about the effect of Sean’s arrest Combs at the after-party. But there was also the impression that Adam Sandler was saying Timothée Chalamet’s name which was just complete nonsense – Sandler even joined in. Glaser doesn’t usually do impressions, but she engaged and it went very well, adding to the fun, celebratory tone to start the evening.

If there was one joke that stuck out in every review, it was probably when she mentioned a few nominees: “‘Wicked,’ ‘Queer,’ ‘Nightbitch,’” then added, “Not just things that Ben Affleck screams after sex.” Sunday, he killed again. —Jason Zinoman
