The scenarios that FC Barcelona is considering: from government assistance to a special agreement with Dani Olmo.
Yesterday was not an easy day for Barça despite their resounding victory against Barbastro. Joan Laporta’s attempts to convince the RFEF to ignore their own regulations did not go as planned. In a joint statement, the RFEF and La Liga rejected the registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor. This decision leaves the Catalan club with two options: obtain approval from the government through the CSD or seek a precautionary measure in the ordinary court.
“The RFEF-La Liga Coordination Agreement Supervisory Commission met to review the prior visa application and processing of federal licenses for players Mr. Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Mr. Pau Víctor Delgado, submitted by the FC Barcelona,” the statement begins.
The text confirms that the club received 28 million euros (40% of 70 million) for VIP boxes, which will allow them to comply with financial fair play, and that all documentation is now in the hands of La Liga and the Federation. However, this only implies that they respect the 1:1 requirement set by La Liga and that they can sign and register any player, but not Olmo and Pau Víctor.

“Once FC Barcelona complies with La Liga’s economic control requirements by January 3, 2025, and once the club has completed the relevant documentation, the La Liga Budget Validation Body has decided to extend the cost limit for the FC Barcelona sports workforce from the date mentioned,” adds the joint press release before refusing the new licenses for the players.
“In this regard, after having requested licenses for the aforementioned players by FC Barcelona and having analyzed the applicable federal regulations, the Supervisory Commission agrees not to grant the prior visa or definitive license requested by FC Barcelona for the players Mr. Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Mr. Pau Víctor Delgado in accordance with the literal interpretation of articles 130.2 and 141.5 of the General Regulations of the RFEF, which prevent a player whose license has been canceled to obtain a license in the same club during the same season,” concludes the official text sent today.

In this scenario, the club can only appeal to the CSD or a judge to allow the registration of both players. If they obtain the precautionary measure, the players will be able to continue playing, but if they do not get the green light, it would pose a serious problem not only for FC Barcelona but also for Spain.
Without a federal license, Dani Olmo will also not be able to be under the orders of national coach Luis de La Fuente. The decision could drag on for months, and the Terrassa native could miss the national team’s break in March. During this period, La Roja must play the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League against the Netherlands. The first leg will take place on Dutch territory on March 20, with the return leg at home on the 23rd.

Coaches can only call players registered with a club. Thus, if Barcelona does not obtain the precautionary measure and Dani Olmo remains at FC Barcelona without being able to participate in La Liga, he will also have to say goodbye to the Spanish national team for the entire season.
