New developments have emerged in the ongoing negotiations over the reopening of customs at Ceuta and Melilla, with Morocco reportedly setting specific «conditions». The Spanish People’s Party (PP) is calling for the Foreign Affairs Minister, José Manuel Albares, to appear before an extraordinary session of the Lower House to clarify the situation. The party is particularly interested in understanding the «conditions imposed» by Rabat, as reported by an Iberian media outlet.
The PP is keen to ensure that the government, led by Pedro Sanchez, does not use the parliamentary recess in January to delay addressing the issue. Consequently, they have pushed for an extraordinary session to expedite discussions.
Additionally, the PP has demanded detailed information on how the internationally recognized customs regime for travelers will be implemented in Ceuta and Melilla. «We want the government to explain in detail the measures that will be taken to ensure the full operation of customs and how this will affect trade and the citizens of Ceuta and Melilla», the PP stated in their request.
Meanwhile, government sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, have clarified that «the negotiations on commercial customs are conducted directly between the foreign ministries of the two kingdoms. These are high-level negotiations», as reported on Friday, January 3.
