This plan now constitutes the main reference framework in the event of serious flooding requiring management at regional level.
An emergency response plan in the event of large-scale flooding was approved on Tuesday by the Brussels Region. Violent storms and heavy rain are often the cause of damage and inconvenience in Brussels municipalities, according to safe.brussels.
At the request of the provincial security unit to prioritize emergency planning and crisis management for extreme weather events, safe.brussels worked last year on a specific emergency and emergency plan. intervention in the event of flooding (PPUI Floods).
Information, scenarios…
It brings together all the information on hydrography, hydraulic infrastructures, competent actors and resources available in the Brussels-Capital Region. It also describes four risk scenarios and the expected impact of each, such as extreme sewer backup, extreme water runoff via roads, high river water levels, water, or even the obstruction of the central channel of the Senne.
The plan also includes an overview of the actions and measures that water operators and crisis management stakeholders can take in the event of flooding or the threat of flooding. Communication and public information, as well as helping citizens to take appropriate measures, are also part of this.
In addition to a water management plan
In 2023, a Brussels water management plan 2022-2027 (PGE) had already been approved and published by Brussels Environment, with the aim of improving the region’s resilience in this regard.
It provided for several government measures to combat flooding and minimize their damage. It is now supplemented by the PPUI, which will be deployed this year at the level of emergency and intervention services and municipalities.
