Saturday January 4 early in the morning, Météo France announced the risk of freezing rain at the end of the day and consequently placed the Côte-d’Or on orange snow and ice alert. And the forecasters were not wrong, as the roads and sidewalks have become real ice rinks.

The road network was strongly impacted by the weather conditions from the afternoon onwards. The prefecture quickly banned the movement of heavy goods vehicles on several routes, notably the Dijon ring road, and public transport was stopped for long hours in the city of Dukes.

A 16-kilometer portion of the A38 between Pouilly-en-Auxois and Sombernon was closed for several hours. The A6 towards near was also cut due to a major accident. At 7 p.m., there were already numerous accidents all over Côte-d’Or.

At 9:30 p.m., SDIS 21 established an initial report of 60 victims:

  • A dead
  • 2 seriously injured
  • 33 minor injuries
  • 24 involved

This Sunday morning, the Côte-d’Or prefecture recorded a total of 51 material accidents. There were 16 personal injury accidents with 36 injuries, including 13 on motorways: 6 on the A31, 3 on the A6, 1 on the A38 and 3 on the A36).

The most notable accident occurred on the A6 towards Lyon, near the Merceuil area. A 20-year-old young man lost his life. Two 36-year-old men were slightly injured, as were a 26-year-old woman and a 6-year-old child. They were evacuated to the university hospital. The accident caused nearly two kilometers of traffic jams.

SDIS 21 has, for its part, strengthened its centers. The volunteer firefighters from Lorsgey, Is-sur-Tille, Mirebeau, -Française and Arc-sur-Tille were mobilized. In total, there were 40 interventions. 16 rescue and emergency care for people were also carried out.
