Former commander of the Réunion gendarmerie, General Pierre Poty takes command of all overseas units, succeeding General Lionel Lavergne.
He is a well-known face among Reunion Islanders who is taking up an important position within the gendarmerie at the start of 2025. General Pierre Poty, commander of the Réunion gendarmerie from 2020 to 2023, takes command of the overseas gendarmerie. He was appointed by decision of the Council of Ministers meeting on Friday January 3.
After a little less than two years as second-in-command of this service overseeing all overseas gendarmerie units, he succeeded the man for whom he was the right-hand man, Lieutenant General Lionel Lavergne.
Along the way, Pierre Poty rose in rank, going from division general to corps general.
General Lavergne was promoted to director of operations and employment at the general directorate of the national gendarmerie.
In addition to his time in Reunion, General Poty had served as second in command of the Guyana gendarmerie. A fine connoisseur of the overseas territories therefore, to command from Arcueil (Val-de-Marne) more than 4,500 soldiers distributed in the ten overseas “COMGEND” as well as the provost gendarmerie and mobile squadrons on mission in the overseas territories and in operations exterior.
