Since August 2024, 118 indigenous cases of chikungunya have been confirmed in the territory according to the latest epidemiological update published by Santé Publique France. The health authority even fears “a transition to the epidemic stage”. In this context, MP Perceval Gaillard questioned the Minister of Health and Access to Care on the need to make the chikungunya vaccine refundable in Reunion. “ The first vaccine against chikungunya has been available since November 20, in French pharmacies and also in Reunion Island: XCHIQ. Prescribed on medical prescription, it costs 150 euros and a single dose provides protection for 3 years. However, this vaccine is not yet reimbursed by Health Insurance.alerted Perceval Gaillard in his letter.
The MP calls for “prompt decision-making” and calls for action as quickly as possible in view of the current situation which is deteriorating day by day. As a reminder, Reunion Island experienced two health crises linked to chikungunya in 2005 with 165,000 cases declared and in 2006 where 45,000 weekly cases were recorded.
