the essential
Yesterday throughout the day, at the Saint-Éloi hall, the Mahorese community gathered to collect donations for their devastated island. A day of solidarity that will call for others as the needs are so great to help the population affected by the passage of Cyclone Chido.
From outside the Saint-Éloi hall, the music and songs of the women of the Mahorese community can be heard while others work on preparing dishes sold for the occasion.
Yesterday throughout the day, the Mahorese collective of the Decazeville Basin organized this meeting in order to allow as many people as possible to contribute to the outpouring of solidarity after the devastating passage of Cyclone Chido which ravaged the island, the December 14 last year. So everyone came to help, to give their time. Also share news of the families who remained behind. Exchanges are made more easily than in the first days of the disaster.
Car “several weeks after the cyclone, the needs are still just as great. Above all, there are places on the island where residents have very little access to water or food”says Bacar Ambdillah, municipal councilor in Viviez and president of the collective of Mahorais du bassin.
Since the first days of the disaster, a large chain of solidarity has been set up in Aveyron, as well as on a larger scale. A necessary energy, always renewed, in order to convey this “help takes a long time to arrive on site”confides Bacar Ambdillah who was able to provide a container, thanks to the help of the company in which he works, which is filling up day by day and which will, in the long term, allow nearly 25 tonnes of food to be transported to place.
Another container bound for Mayotte
“We are instead asking for water and food. Clothing is important but the priority remains feeding the population”confides Bacar Ambdillah who says he is still surprised by the momentum of “generosity on the part of many people and businesses, which allowed us to collect many donations”. The community is mobilizing in Aveyron. And beyond. “I have been contacted by people and associations from neighboring departments who are asking how to deliver this aid. We will be able to help them thanks to this container that we fill every day”.
The idea would be “to transport other containers to Mayotte”confides Bacar Ambdillah. The mobilization of the community and other associations therefore does not weaken while the distress of the island’s population is still as glaring. Moreover, Saturday February 22 at the Jacques-Rey space in Viviez from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., one day “cultural and culinary will be organized and will raise funds for Mayotte”says the president of the Mahorais du Bassin collective at the origin of this demonstration.
