The former Minister of National Education died at the age of 87 in Paris, his son announced. A member of the Socialist Party, before joining Nicolas Sarkozy, he was also known for taking climate skeptic positions.
Claude Allègre, former Minister of National Education under Lionel Jospin under the mandate of Jacques Chirac, died in Paris at the age of 87, his son announced this Saturday, January 4 to AFP.
Claude Allègre, a geochemist by training, occupied rue de Grenelle from 1997 to 2000, when Lionel Jospin, to whom he is close, was Prime Minister.
A long-time member of the Socialist Party, before joining Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007, he was also known for controversial positions on climate change.
The current Prime Minister, François Bayrou, paid him “tribute” in a message published on “He loved transmission through school, of which he had a high opinion. Courage was his mark,” added the head of government.
