Olympic champion Sara Hector won her second World Cup women’s giant slalom of the season on Saturday in an event where Italian Federica Brignone suffered a fall in the first run.
Hector, a 32-year-old Swede, clocked a cumulative time of one minute 54.86 seconds and finished 1.42 seconds ahead of 18-year-old Albanian Lara Colturi. Hector dominated the initial heat with a time of 58.05 seconds, 1.13 seconds better than Colturi.
Four Canadians took part in the race but none of them was able to qualify for the second round, which brought together the top-30 after the first portion of the event. Valérie Grenier (1:01.81) ranked 38th in the first heat while Justine Lamontagne (1:01.97) finished 41st.
Hector’s performance also allowed him to take first place in the giant slalom rankings and also in the general rankings.
In giant slalom, Hector has 296 points after four races, 96 more than Brignone. In the general classification, Hector amassed 407 points, giving him a 24-point lead over Swiss Camille Rast.
