It is Spurs up against Newcastle United today.
Eddie Howe looking to make it six of the best.
His team in irresistible form, five wins in a row with sixteen goals scored and just the one conceded.
The last four Premier League matches, four wins and thirteen goals scored, four clean sheets.
Spurs with only one win in their last seven Premier League games, haven’t won a PL match at home for over two months.
A massive 15 goals conceded by Tottenham in their last four home games (all competitions).
Only one of the first choice Spurs back five (keeper and back four) available, at least nine players missing altogether, whilst Ange Postecoglous has stated that they’ve also had an illness bug running through the squad this past week.
Impossible to know for sure the truth of certain claims, but I have even seen Spurs fans claiming Tottenham have had as few as seven first team squad members available to train at times this week.
Which is why I am feeling a little sick myself…
As in, feeling a bit sick in anticipation of this match, as so many things point to a Newcastle United win AND Spurs defeat.
I felt the same before the Man U match, so many things pointed to Eddie Howe’s side winning, yet as a Newcastle fan you just felt something would go wrong. The expectation of winning, leading to increased stress and sickly feeling that somehow we would find a way not to. As opposed to back in the day, simply taking for granted United would lose against Man U, so no expectation meant no concerns about losing, as you already knew that was going to happen.
Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have now won four of their last five matches against Man U (home and away).
Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have won four of their last five matches against Spurs (home and away).
The exception was 13 months ago when the incredible injury crisis finally overwhelmed United in December 2023, six defeats in seven PL matches, December 2023 into January 2024. United losing 4-1 against Spurs away, with much of that defeat self-inflicted on top of all the missing players.
A completely different scenario now. Newcastle United now in such good form. Both as individuals and as a team, so many Newcastle players shining.
Man U were on a terrible run of form and conceding plenty of goals, plus losing games at home. Then had extra injuries and suspension on top of their other problems.
Spurs on a terrible run of form and conceding even more goals than Man U, plus terrible form at home, three home defeats and two draws in their last five PL games.
I can’t help but think. This Spurs match is one where it is Newcastle United’s to lose.
Here’s hoping they don’t find a way to do so and we are a couple of goals up very early on to settle the nerves,, just as was the case at Old Trafford.
