After the kick-off for two, three wheels and license-free cars whose first registration dates back to before 2017, in 2025 it will be the turn of L category models released between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019.

Technical inspection for two wheels made its debut in 2024. A measure which concerns the entire L category, with two and three wheel scooters, motorcycles, mopeds of less than 50 cm3 or even cars without a license (light and heavy quadricycles).

First checks in 2024

These vehicles are now also subject to the obligation to pass this technical inspection like private cars. But at a less frequent rate, five years after the first registration, then every three years. For a car, it is four years after its first registration, then every two years.

For this first year of the start of technical inspection of category L, only the oldest vehicles were concerned. The models before 2017 had been distributed to avoid too large an influx into the centers.

Those whose date of first registration was between January 1 and April 15 (for all years before 2017) had until August 14 to take it. For a date of first registration from April 16, the check had to be carried out between August 15 and December 31, with a maximum period of 4 months: for a vehicle registered in 2015 and put into circulation on June 20, 2015, the first inspection was to be carried out no later than October 20, 2024.

If the authorities were to show a certain tolerance, a lack of technical control results in a fine of 135 euros.

The “2017 to 2019” expected in 2025

In 2025, it will therefore be the turn of vehicles whose first registrations were carried out between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019 to have an up-to-date technical inspection.

You can easily find your year of entry based on this date of first registration in our module below.

In 2026, the catch-up will continue with models from 2020 to 2021. Then we will reach the normal pace in 2027, because it will be the turn of the first registrations in 2022, i.e. 5 years later.

Why is technical inspection becoming mandatory for two-wheelers?

Second-hand resale also affected

Important clarification: a technical inspection of less than 6 months will also be necessary in the event of the sale of a second-hand model more than 5 years old (unless you sell to a garage or a dealer).

In 2024, only category L vehicles – whose first registration was carried out before 2020 – were therefore concerned.

In 2025, it will logically be for vehicles before January 1, 2021 to also submit to it in the event of resale.

For example, if you sell a two-wheeler whose first registration is registered on September 10, 2020, you will need to provide proof of technical inspection if you sell it from September 10, 2025.
