For three days, the Prony plain, in Mont-Dore, has been ravaged by a fire which has already destroyed more than a thousand hectares. An order was issued this Friday, January 3, by the mayor of the commune of Mont-Dore prohibiting all access to the Grand Sud area between Prony, the Pirogues Supérieures and the Pic du Pin (Camp Penamax) following the ‘fire.
The fire started on January 1st. The cause was a poorly extinguished barbecue by campers at Petite Rivière Bleue, during a dry period, despite an order prohibiting all fires in the town.
It is an act of incivility, of unconsciousness. An order prohibits all fires in this area, I still don’t understand why it is not respected.
Laurent Thomas, commander of civil security relief operations
Faced with the emergency, the ORSEC Level 2 Forest Fires plan was triggered on January 2. Eleven vehicles were involved, twenty-eight firefighters, and two water bomber helicopters. On site, firefighters from the town of Mont-Dore, Civil Security, but also national reinforcements. The area has around ten hot spots all over the Prony plain.
Firefighters use tactical burning techniques.
We create backfires to prevent the main flames from advancing towards sensitive areas, such as ridges.
Lieutenant Mouleme, tactical fire officer of Civil Security
Civil security therefore calls on the population to be extremely vigilant in the sector in order to facilitate the intervention of the emergency services.
The fight against the fire continues tomorrow, Saturday January 4, using an equivalent system.
