The Monte Rose massif, near Pointe Dufour, was the scene of an impressive landslide. The danger remains extreme in this area. An alpine rescuer documents the event with spectacular drone footage.

A landslide occurred on the Italian side of Monte Rosa, according to reports this weekend. Luca Tondat, an alpine rescuer, posted aerial videos captured by drone on Instagram and Facebook, showing what he described as “a massive detachment still in progress.”

The landslide, which occurred at night near Pointe Dufour, the highest peak in Switzerland, just below the Belvédère glacier, triggered an alert in the region. Luca Tondat calls for caution: “Do not venture towards Alpe Pedriola in the coming days. The collapses continue.”

Worrying climatic causes

According to 20 minuteslocal meteorologists attribute this landslide to the abnormally high temperatures and low snowfall in the region. The melting of permafrost could also have contributed to the instability of the area.

The Monte Rosa massif is not its first episode of this type: in the spring of 2024, another significant landslide had already been reported. (adapted jah)
