The first major exhibition of Collected by Kawauchi in the United Kingdom since 2006 is centered on the series M/E – letters that mean both “’Mother”, “Earth” and “Me” – moving between explorations of the fragile beauty of the natural world and the gentle rhythm of domestic scenes, capturing the connections and continuity of life on this “planet we call home”.
M/E debuted in 2019 and is inspired by images of Icelandic volcanoes and ice floes, snowy landscapes of Hokkaido, and daily life at home during the COVID pandemic, inviting viewers to reconsider our connections as humans with nature.
At the edge of the everyday world highlights the small, personal movements in our lives that create larger, universal journeys, with photographic prints and film installations from M/E (Mother Earth), Illuminance and earlier series such asAmettsuchi et Ailawhile showcasing Kawauchi’s more than 30 photobook publications, exploring his career through words and images.
At the edge of the everyday world offers a selection of photo books covering over 30 Kawauchi book titles exploring his career through words and images. Rooted in themes of care, identity, and sustainability, Kawauchi’s lyrical work inspires audiences to rethink humanity’s fragile connections to the universe and ecology.
The exhibition is accompanied by a new publication, including newly commissioned texts and images of the exhibited works from M/E, Aila, Amettsuchi et Illuminance. The exhibition “At the edge of the everyday world” is presented in collaboration with the Bristol Photo Festival, an international biennial of contemporary photography, organized in the city’s museums, galleries and independent spaces, and supported by the Japan Foundation.
Collected by Kawauchi was born in Shiga, Japan, in 1972; lives and works in Chiba, Japan.
