Coralie and her partner detected a scam that could affect all bpost customers: here’s how they avoided it

Coralie contacted us via the orange “Alert us” button. She and her partner narrowly avoided a bpost scam. They testify in order to prevent other people from falling into the trap.

Wednesday morning, as usual, Coralie goes to collect her mail. Among her various invoices, she found a paper mentioning bpost: “I found this strange, because I hadn’t ordered anything for several months.“This letter mentions a recent change in the preferences of Caroline’s companion:” There wasn’t too much information, they didn’t specify what changes were being discussed. “Coralie is already suspicious, but she continues reading:”The letter included several personal information.

Among the latter, some are correct, such as the name of his companion and his address. Others, on the contrary, are completely incorrect, such as the email address and telephone number: “At first I thought maybe my account had been hacked and someone was using it for me.” Coralie then goes to her bpost mobile application to check if her information is also incorrect: “In the application, all the information was correct, so I was really worried.”

The end of the letter is also disturbing: “The letter stated that if our information was incorrect, we could go to the link provided and enter the code provided.” Coralie is now certain: she is indeed facing a scam. But, out of conscience, she still contacted bpost customer service: “When I explained the situation to them, they told me that the mail did not indeed come from them and that I could throw it away.” bpost also clarified to him that they never contact customers regarding preferences and that it is up to the customer themselves to make changes if they wish.

I testify because some could easily fall into the trap

Coralie is relieved to have been able to quickly detect the scam before falling victim to it: “I don’t know what would have happened if I had actually entered that link.“Nevertheless, she remains scandalized by this type of behavior: “We are used to receiving scams by email or by SMS, but this by mail, I am shocked.” Coralie is particularly concerned about older people: “When we receive a letter from bpost, we tell ourselves that it is a trusted organization, some could easily fall for it” It is to prevent this from happening to others that she decided to testify: “With the end-of-year holidays, we order more things. Some might be tempted to do so to be sure to receive their packages, when in the end, it’s a scam”she laments.
