Spain: Olmo’s future at Barça remains uncertain

The future of playmaker Dani Olmo at FC Barcelona remains uncertain this Tuesday, with the Catalan club having to find a financial solution to register their new recruit.

Currently in debt, Barcelona had registered the Spanish international, main summer reinforcement, until December 31 using 80% of the salary of injured defender Andreas Christensen, thanks to an exception allowing clubs to replace players absent for a long period.

Due to spending limits imposed by La Liga, Olmo is currently playing on a temporary basis while the club resolves its financial problems. Otherwise, he could become a free agent as early as Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

The club, which has exhausted legal avenues to extend the registration until June 30, 2025, announced on Tuesday that it had requested a new license from the Spanish Federation for Olmo and promising striker Victor, who is in the same situation.

According to Spanish media, this approach could allow FC Barcelona to gain precious time to complete the necessary bureaucratic procedures.

However, La Liga issued a statement shortly after, saying that “Barcelona has not presented any alternative” to comply with the budgetary rules, “which allows them to register any player from January 2.”

A possible departure of Olmo would be a big blow for the Blaugrana, who currently occupy third place in the championship.

Born near Barcelona, the 26-year-old came through the ranks at Barça before playing in the Croatian and German leagues. He has scored five goals in La Liga this season and was one of the key contributors to Spain’s success at Euro 2024.
