the creator revealed the release date

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently shared important details about this dramatic ending and hints about what the future holds for season 3.

Clues on how season 3 will unfold

In the final episode of season 2, a key moment marks the conclusion of Gi-hun’s dramatic arc. Indeed, his best friend, Jung-bae, is killed before his eyes by The Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun), one of the most enigmatic characters in the series. This brutal murder occurs after Gi-hun fails in his attempt to rebel against the game’s system.

The horror of this scene is heightened by the fact that, unlike Gi-hun, the audience knows that The Front Man is actually In-hoa former winner of the game who became one of the main organizers of the events.

Hwang Dong-hyuk explains that the end of season 2 is not just a shock moment. It was rather a matter of the culmination of a story arc where all of Gi-hun’s attempts to stop the game fail. His quest to save his friends and put an end to this infernal machine ends in a devastating loss: the death of Jung-bae.

Gi-hun thus reaches a breaking point after the loss of his friend. Hwang would have designed this ending to mark a major turning point in character development. Indeed, after this tragic event, Gi-hun is plunged into a state of guilt and despair. How can a man, having lost everything, still find the strength to continue his fight? This question will be at the heart of season 3.

At the end of season 2, an intriguing post-credits scene introduces a new aspect of the game. The famous giant dolls, immortalized in the game of “Red Light, Green Light”, appear in a different form. In this scene, we see male and female versions of these dolls, suggesting a renewal of tests and an expansion of the universe de Squid Game.

This could mean that season 3 will take a very different turn. If the focus until then had been on the participants, the upcoming season might well further explore the inner workings of the games organizationnotably the place of The Front Man and his relationships with other figures of power.
