In several countries close to France, buying cigarettes will cost more.
This is part of the bad news awaiting the French in 2025. During the fall, the former government announced that there would be no increase in the price of tobacco. However, customs finally announced that prices would increase, on average, by 50 cents per package from January 1, flirting with €13.
A cost that is ever higher for the 12 million (approximately) smokers in France. This is why they do not hesitate to cross the border to obtain supplies at a lower cost. In Spain in particular, in Luxembourg or even in Switzerland, countries where packages are lower. However, prices will (or have already) increased in these countries.
This is particularly the case in Spain where the prices of certain packages have been higher in recent days. On the other side of the Pyrenees, the pack of Marlboro Red 100’S as well as Marlboro Gold 100’S increased from €5.40 to €5.80 at the beginning of December. Furthermore, since the end of November, the pack of Winston Red 20s has increased to €5.60 and that of Camel Essential Blue to €5.75. Here again, the increase is 40 cents. In the vast majority of cases, this is the increase applied to all packs in Spanish tobacco shops.
In Luxembourg too, prices will increase from 1is January. The announcement was made several weeks ago and, generally speaking, an increase of 30 cents on each package will be applied as soon as the new year begins. Buying a pack of Marlboro Red in the Grand Duchy should therefore cost €6.30 compared to €6 until now, while Winston Reds will increase to €5.80 compared to €5.50 and Camels to €6.40 compared to 6 .10€.
As surprising as it may seem, Switzerland is also an interesting country for those who want to buy tobacco inexpensively. Prices are indeed lower than in France, but some will also be increased from 1is January. The Swiss Federal Council announced an increase of 40 cents per packet of rolling tobacco and heating tobacco. On the other hand, there is no plan to increase the price of a pack of cigarettes, still around €9.50 on average.
For its part, Italy – also very advantageous compared to France – has planned a slight increase in its prices. If the increase in the tax on cigarettes should be painless, an increase of 20 cents on 30g packets of rolling tobacco is still expected. However, it will always remain more attractive to cross the border.
