Christopher Nolan's new film for Universal is The Odyssey, an adaptation of the epic poem composed by Homer around the 8th century BC, the same studio has revealed. “Christopher Nolan's next film, The Odyssey, is a mythical action epic filmed around the world using brand new IMAX film technology“, wrote the studio in a message published on X.”The film brings Homer's founding saga to IMAX theater screens for the first time and will be released in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026“. Various rumors were circulating about the director's next film, including a new James Bond or a Horror film. Zendaya and Anne Hathaway are confirmed in the cast, together with Matt Damon and Tom Holland, who recently declared that he has absolutely no idea what the director's next film will be about.
Homer's ancient Greek poem tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and fighting against divine will. The tale includes iconic episodes such as his encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the mermaids and the witch-goddess Circe, culminating in his reunion with his wife Penelope. Previous adaptations include the 1954 Italian film Ulysses, directed by Mario Camerini and starring Kirk Douglas, and the 1997 television miniseries The Odyssey, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, a two-part adaptation starring Armand Assante as Odysseus.
