Last night, during the Ligue 1 match between Monaco and PSG, Gianluigi Donnarumma was the protagonist of a game with strong dynamics and images.
In an episode that has reignited debates on safety on the pitch and the management of athletes’ safety in high-level competitions, Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper for PSG and the Italian national team, suffered a significant injury following physical contact during a Ligue 1 match against Monaco.
The images of his face, marked by ten stitches on his right cheek, raised concern and strong reactions after Monaco-PSG last night. Here’s what happened.
The accident on the pitch
During the match scheduled for the 16th round of Ligue 1 between Monaco and PSG, Gianluigi Donnarumma experienced moments of fear when, in an attempt to deflect a lob aimed at his goal, he received an involuntary but violent blow at face height from by Wilfried Singo, Monaco and former Torino winger. The sole of Singo’s boot left Donnarumma on the ground, visibly exhausted and bleeding, leading to an emergency substitution where the Italian goalkeeper was replaced by Safonov.
Consequences
The traumatic interlude required immediate medical intervention for Donnarumma, resulting in as many as ten stitches applied to his right cheek. Shock at images of his post-injury face made the rounds in the sports media, heightening concerns for the health and safety of players during competitions. The former AC Milan goalkeeper, who himself is not having a great moment at this stage of his Parisian adventure, will now also have to deal with this misfortune.
Hot reactions
Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed his anger already in the corridors of the stadium at half-time both for the absence of referee sanctions against Singo, pointing the finger at the decisions of François Letexier, referee of the match, and towards the Monaco side itself for not even trying to retract the shoe before it was too late. The images of the disfigurement suffered by Donnarumma are strong and have already made the rounds on the internet.
