Less rain than usual, North South contrast for the sun and temperatures: what was the weather like in November?

A month marked by sometimes pronounced regional differences has come to an end. What emerges from the climatological report for the month of November in carried out by the Météo-Villes site shows strong disparities concerning temperature and sunshine, less so regarding precipitation.

The average temperature ends 1.1°C above the season averages with a thermal indicator of 10.04°C. This indicator corresponds to readings from thirty meteorological stations representative of the entire metropolitan area.

At the start of the month, however, temperatures were barely seasonal in the northern half. At the same time, temperatures sometimes around 25°C were reached in the south of the country. Then, low temperatures for the time of year gripped most of the country on November 21 and 22, although the southwest quarter remained clear of this situation. Temperatures then rose briefly, but sharply.

In the end, “the further we headed towards the southern sectors, the more gentleness was required. But if the anomaly fluctuates between + 1°C and + 1.5°C in the South-East, it is in the South-West quarter where this mildness has been truly remarkable. In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées and even Auvergne, the anomaly is between + 2°C and + 3°C,” analyzes the specialized site.

The rains show a deficit of 33% on a national scale compared to a normal situation. “Rare are the cities to have exceeded their monthly rainfall norm. They are mainly located in the south of the Basin (up to + 31% in ), at the mouth of the (+ 9% in ) or even in the north of the Alps (+ 18% in Bourg-Saint- Mauritius)”.

Météo-Villes underlines that “it is over the entire Rhône valley, on the Côte d'Azur as well as in Corsica that the rains were the most insignificant”. The deficit could sometimes reach 70%, even 90%.

The contrast is also very strong regarding the sunshine. Close to 0% deviation from the norm on a national scale, the average is not representative of reality. In fact, the excess is sometimes pronounced in the southern half while the northern half experienced very little sunshine.

In the North, the sun was generally less present by 30% to 50% compared to standards, in particular due to the frequent and lasting presence of fog and low clouds. In the South, on the contrary, it generally shone 10% to 20% more than usual, sometimes up to + 40% in Corsica. “But it is from Aquitaine to the Alps, via the Massif-Central and Limousin where the level of sunshine was exceptional during this month of November, with values sometimes 50% to 70% above the averages”. Special mention for Brive (Corrèze) which displays + 68% on the clock with a total of 149 hours and 55 minutes spent under the sun.
