Explosion at polystyrene factory leaves three dead and several injured

An explosion that occurred late Wednesday morning in an expanded polystyrene production factory left three people dead and seven injured in Ibi, in an industrial zone located about 40 kilometers from Alicante, in southeastern Spain. Emergency services confirmed this report in a message published on the social network X shortly after the incident.

According to initial statements from Alberto Martin, emergency director of the Valencian Community, the disaster was caused by the explosion of a boiler within the factory. He told Spanish public television TVE that the explosion had also impacted a neighboring company, leading to the death of one of its employees due to the shock wave.

A heavily damaged building

“Three people died and seven were injured,” emergency services confirmed. Among the injured, three are in serious condition, requiring urgent medical treatment. The shock wave caused significant structural damage to the affected factory.

Firefighters, rushed to the scene, noticed a partial collapse of the building. “Part of the industrial building collapsed: the roof fell, about half of the building surface collapsed, which means that some interior walls also collapsed,” they reported.

Support from the authorities

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences and support to the families of the victims, as well as the rescue teams. “All the support from the Spanish government to the victims of this accident, as well as to the firefighters and emergency services working on site,” he declared to the deputies.

For the moment, local authorities have not provided further information on the exact causes of the explosion. During the day, the rescue teams continued their work to secure the site and provide assistance to those affected. An investigation has been opened to understand what could have triggered this accident.
