After the death of Ramy Elgaml, the walls of Corvetto, the outlying neighborhood in the southeast of Milan where he lived, bear witness to the anger and sadness shared by many of the residents. On the night of Saturday November 23 to Sunday November 24, the 19-year-old young man, who arrived in Italy with his family eleven years ago from Egypt, died after falling from the scooter driven by a friend. They had refused a check from the carabinieri and were trying to escape them.
The circumstances of his death still remain unclear, but his relatives accuse the agents of having deliberately hit the two-wheeler. Violent protests punctuated the days following the tragedy. Clashes took place between the police and around a hundred young people from the neighborhood. They set trash cans on fire, damaged a bus and fired fireworks.
