The title smacks of epic and classic heroes. Ulysse & Cyranoan album by Antoine Cristau and Xavier Dorison (screenplay) and Servain (drawing) and published by Casterman (176 p., €34.90), received the Landerneau comic strip prize on Tuesday, November 26, organized by the Espaces cultural E. Leclerc who offered him a promotional campaign in the brand’s stores.
The award-winning work “amazed the jury as a whole. I took great pleasure in reading this album supported by a very effective staging serving a strong and moving story with a backdrop of gastronomy”commented the president of the jury, the designer Mathieu Sapin.
The kitchen like a theater stage
The comic strip features Ulysse Lecerf, a future high school graduate in France during the Trente Glorieuses, destined to take over the family cement works, according to his father’s wishes. But when the latter is accused of collaboration during the war, the family goes into exile in Burgundy. The young man then has two encounters there that will change his future: that of Cyrano, a secret man, and that of great cuisine…
Rebellion against paternal authority is a classic narrative plot. But in this beautiful album that is Ulysse & Cyranoit takes on delightful gourmet accents. Antoine Cristau and Xavier Dorison pen a touching script with overtones of an initiatory journey coupled with a beautiful story of friendship.
Servain’s flamboyant and expressive drawing, which plays wonderfully with colors, is not to be outdone, reinforcing the dramatic aspect of the story and making the kitchen a theater stage where passions, disappointments and success are played out. This comic strip doesn’t just ask us about the recipe for “good” cooking. It brings us the ingredients: sharing and transmission.
