Polling stations for the first round of legislative elections have been open since 7am this Sunday, June 30 in New Caledonia. First trend at midday: a sharp increase in participation, at 32.39%.

A finding that has been anticipated since this morning, given the number of people in the offices and confirmed by the first figures communicated by the municipalities and the high commission. During the previous election, it was 13.06% in 2022 and 15.76% in 2017. Thanks to the work of the town halls and the internal security forces, the vote took place in the vast majority without incident and in a secure manner.”the high commission details in a press release.

In detail, among the participation rates communicated by the municipalities:

  • Noumea: 23.8%, it was 13% in 2022
  • Dumbéa 27.7%, compared to 13.3% at the same time in 2022
  • Païta: 35%
  • Boulouparis : 49,5%
  • La Foa 39.86%
  • Sarraméa : 40%
  • Kouaoua: 24% at 10 a.m.
  • Moindou: 50.60%
  • Bourail: 48%, at noon
  • Pouembout 39,62%
  • Kone 37.11%
  • Hienghène: 49.54%
  • Koumac : 31,6%
  • Lifou: 22.9%

In Houaïlou, on the other hand, the polling stations were unable to open this morning. Access to the town hall and many roads are blocked. According to the High Commissioner, “Last night, the gendarmerie brigade was the target of violent attacks with the use of a mine to damage the enclosure. The situation is currently not stable in the town. Access to the town hall is blocked by rioters, thereby preventing the opening of the various polling stations and therefore the holding of the vote.”

The High Commissioner of the Republic strongly condemns these acts “which go against the proper conduct of the election and the proper functioning of our democracy.”
