I don’t believe in a sentimental choice

It looks like Canadiens fans are in a good mood these days.

I don’t know if it’s because Shea Weber was inducted into the Hall of Fame or because the Canadiens had a good start to the draft (including Ivan Demidov), but the fans are happy.

And clearly, the fact of fishing Aatos Koivu makes a lot of people happy.

Even though his father Saku was not the most appreciated player by those who watched the Canadiens dynasties, he still had an impact on younger hockey fans.

He was also captain of the Flanelle for around ten years.

Even though Saku was there during one of the worst periods in franchise history, he is most remembered (to those who don’t like him) for dividing the locker room and not speaking French.

But never mind, whatever your opinion of the father, we see that there is a story when the son is drafted. And if you don’t believe me, believe our live stats on the site after pick #70…

But there are many comments coming out saying that the CH was a sentimental choice and that it was too early to do so.

That said, there is something that is bothering me: I don’t think Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton are at the stage of making sentimental third-round draft picks.

They are trying to rebuild the club. Would they have used their third right to speak in 2024 for a “son of” if they did not have confidence in him? This is not what has been proven to us in the past.

I rather think that Koivu impressed the Canadiens management in interviews and on the ice. And yesterday, Kent Hughes said that it can help a player to have a good interview.

Am I saying Aatos Koivu is a good player? I don’t remember commenting on his qualities as a hockey player since the beginning of my text.

There are some who like it. And there are some, like Snake, who don’t like it.

But what I’m saying is that it’s not the Canadiens’ management’s style to make decisions simply to please the Canadiens’ passionate fans.

If the Canadian decided according to the fans, Shane Wright and Matvei Michkov would be in Montreal. Tyler Toffoli would not have been traded. Alexander Romanov is said to have remained in town. There would be more QMJHL prospects in the club’s ranks. Should I continue like this for a long time?

Prolongation

There’s a chance the Canadian screws up with Koivu, but there’s a chance he’s a good player. And I would be surprised if the decision was made because of what the Poppy did in time.

We’ll see in a few years.
