Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and widow of the late monarch Hassan II, died on Saturday, a Palace spokesperson said in a statement. “The spokesperson for the Royal Palace announces, with great sadness and deep sorrow, the death of HRH (Her Royal Highness) Princess Lalla Latifa on Saturday,” according to the statement relayed by the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP).

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune sent a message of condolences to “the king of Morocco, brother country, Mohammed VI, following the death of his mother,” said the Algerian presidency. “I was saddened to hear the news of your mother’s death. Following this sad news which has left you and the royal family in mourning, I would like to present, in my name and in the name of the Algerian people, to your majesty, my sincere condolences,” writes Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

No official responsibilities

Algiers broke off diplomatic relations with Rabat in August 2021, denouncing a series of “hostile acts” by its neighbor, particularly concerning Western Sahara and normalization with Israel.

Princess Lalla Latifa had no official responsibilities and was not known to participate in public events. According to foreign media, she married Hassan II’s former security chief after his death in 1999, and lived between Morocco and France. The information has never been officially confirmed. Mohammed VI has reigned over Morocco since July 1999, when he succeeded his father.
