Port-Cartier Mayor Alain Thibault met with Sept-Îles Housing Committee President Guy Berthe to “ask him for his recipe.” Mayor Thibault wants to use the same construction plan for a 60-unit building and take the same approach to submit a project to governments for Port-Cartier as quickly as possible.

The economic outlook is good in Port-Cartier with the inauguration in early 2025 of the first wind farm on the Côte-Nord, the addition of Carbonity to the Arbec-Biocarburant AE Forestry Complex, the construction of a flotation plant by ArcelorMittal and the project recently confirmed by Shango Canada.

Need for housing

Creating so many new jobs will require housing development. Alain Thibault is looking at all the solutions to the housing crisis. “We want to buy time. The Minister of Housing wants to see projects in Port-Cartier. We have to move forward,” says the mayor.

The Villa Port-Cartier Residence, which has 14 places for seniors, is in the process of being expanded. The Port-Cartier OMH is slowly moving forward with a project to build 30 affordable housing units. The Municipal Office has a real estate portfolio of 130 housing units.

Various avenues in view

A private developer is also interested in building an apartment block in the courtyard of the shopping center, Alain Thibault tells us. Other developers are inquiring about land on Le Moyne Street, he adds.

“It’s not enough,” according to the mayor. The City of Port-Cartier will develop a 60-unit housing project using the plans and specifications used for three buildings in Sept-Îles. Alain Thibault plans to request funding, as in the neighbouring city, from the Société du Plan Nord, the Société d’Habitation du Québec and the federal government.
