Canada Day long weekend: series of fatal collisions on our roads

Head-to-head collisions, speed, dangerous driving: a series of fatal collisions on Quebec roads plunged families into mourning during this long Canada Day weekend.

According to a census of the various media events, at least three people lost their lives, while several others were injured.

Sunday was a particularly mournful day.

Jahmal Emilus Dorcelus, a 19-year-old man, died around 6 a.m. on Highway 15, near the exit 136 ramp.

He was in one of two Mercedes that sped off behind a bakery delivery truck.

They were “driving like crazy,” said Corin Ceban, the bakery’s co-owner, whose employee is “still in shock.”

One of the vehicles managed to continue on its way, while the other suffered a violent impact with the heavy goods vehicle.

Two passengers were injured: Jahmal Emilus Dorcelus had no chance and a 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The two drivers reportedly fled the scene after the collision. The Sûreté du Québec is continuing its investigation.

Swallowed to death

Almost at the same time, around 6:30 a.m., a 75-year-old man was struck to death on Boulevard du Quartier in Brossard.

As speed may have been a factor, a 21-year-old driver was arrested and could face charges of dangerous driving causing death. He was released on a promise to appear in court and certain conditions.

Several residents of the area met by The newspaper said they were used to drivers speeding on the boulevard.

“We just moved here in April, and since then, we’ve always heard people gassing a lot,” says Jeremy Tsang, who lives with his partner and her daughter. “We hear it in the morning, during the day, and in the evening.”

Face to face

The day ended with a hard-hitting face-off around 11:45 p.m. in Sainte-Julie, in Montérégie, on Highway 30.

A septuagenarian died after driving the wrong way in a westbound direction. He hit a vehicle with three people on board. All four people involved were taken to hospital.

There were fears for the life of a female passenger in her nineties who was in the second vehicle.

Scared

Still on Sunday, around 9 p.m., in Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade, in Mauricie, other road users had a real scare.

A 25-year-old man and his 24-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital for treatment with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

They had the misfortune of hitting a bear that was crossing the road. Their sedan ended up in the ditch.
