Princess Lalla Latifa, widow of Hassan II and mother of King Mohammed VI, died this Saturday. This was announced by the spokesperson of the Royal Palace, in a statement relayed by the Moroccan press.

“The spokesperson of the Royal Palace announces, with immense sadness and deep affliction, the death of HRH Princess Lalla Latifa, may God have her in His Holy Mercy… In announcing this painful loss, we pray to the Almighty to surround the late deceased with His infinite mercy, divine clemency and to welcome her into His vast paradise,” the statement read.

The document signed by the Royal Palace also implores a “long life to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God preserve Him and perpetuate His glory.” Lalla Latifa, born Latifa Amahzoune, married King Hassan II on November 9, 1961. Five children were born from this union. They are Princesses Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asmaa, Lalla Hasnaa, Prince Moulay Rachid and the current King of Morocco, Mohammed VI.

Morocco in mourning after the death of Lalla Latifa

For some time, she had settled in France. His state of health had caused some concern among Moroccans. Moreover, King Mohammed VI regularly went to France, to the bedside of his sickly mother, as she grew older. In 2023, for example, the Moroccan king made several trips to France. This was due to his mother’s poor health.

After the death of King Hassan 2, Lalla Latifa married her husband’s former bodyguard, Mohamed Médiouri. A marriage that her king’s son had not initially accepted. After shunning his mother for a while, Mohammed VI ended up turning the page and accepting this union. The death, which occurred today, of the mother of the Moroccan king plunges the entire Shereef kingdom into mourning.
