Weather report. The snow has arrived at Champ du Feu, but it’s not a sure thing for skiing

Earlier in the month, rare flakes had appeared in the Field of Fire, before disappearing just as quickly. This time, real snowfall occurred during the night of Tuesday 19 to Wednesday 20 November. Between 5 and 10 cm of snow were recorded in the morning, but the conditions are far from ideal.

On the one hand, the sun, present up to around 900 m altitude, was absent from the summit, enveloped in a cold fog, indicated our correspondent present on site, who only encountered two mothers with their children, who had come of Scherwiller and the Villé valley.

On the other hand, the snow was wet. And fell on waterlogged ground. Under these conditions, it is “difficult to put something in place”, indicated Sébastien Isenmann, head of the Champ du Feu Nordic center. He hoped to try in the afternoon to prepare one to two skiable kilometers on the Lisières Hautes piste.

Sledding and alpine skiing

The secure toboggan runs were closed on Wednesday morning. The material has not yet been installed. It is still possible to sled on the slopes of the summit, but on not very slippery snow.

Ski rentals were also closed Wednesday morning and the Alpine ski area could not be reached. However, an employee was on site to test the snow cannons.

Cold weather, then a quick warm spell

Light snowfall is forecast for Thursday afternoon, and temperatures are expected to drop to -10°C overnight from Thursday to Friday, before a severe softening on Sunday and Monday, which could quickly doom the thin snow cover.
