Tuesday June 25, INSEE published the May figures for consumer prices in Reunion and the comparison over the year. Result: an increase in May of 0.2% but 3.5% over one year.
Increases that we all see on a daily basis, but which hit the most precarious the hardest. Students, for example, are forced to change or even restrict their eating habits due to lack of resources.
The “Solidarité Étudiante Réunion” association, which is responsible for the solidarity grocery store project at the University of Moufia, bears witness to this:
“We noted an increase in attendance at our grocery store of 20% during the 2022-2023 academic year, a trend which continues for the current year 2023-2024, due to the current inflationary context which puts more and more of students in a precarious situation.” confirms Kitty Grondin, the President of the association.
Due to this situation, the use of social assistance vouchers issued by the social worker has increased significantly. These tickets, worth €100, to be used in two installments, aim to compensate for the lack of resources while helping beneficiaries manage their budget.
“The feeling that we may have had due to the rise in prices is certain torments which are illustrated by the increase in students in need and sometimes in absolute distress who come to obtain supplies from us.”
The association is also directly impacted by the rise in food prices for its supplies.
In May 2024, the consumer price index continued to rise in Réunion (+0.2%, as in April). The prices of services, energy and tobacco increased, while those of manufactured products decreased.
