Many French people will be hitting the road in a few weeks to reach their vacation spot. And for some, the road will be long and therefore… expensive. Despite a lull in recent weeks, fuel prices remain very high in France.

Unleaded 95 was priced at €1.84 per liter on average in stations (down 3 cents compared to the previous week), according to figures as of Friday June 14 and relayed by AFP . Super unleaded 95-E10 sold for €1.80 (down 7 cents) and diesel at €1.68 per liter (up 9 cents).

Cost-effective operations in major brands

To avoid draining your vacation budget, you’ll have to be smart. For example, by taking advantage of the cost-price operations launched regularly during the summer by major retail brands. Capital gives the example of Intermarché which plans to offer this offer during the first big departure weekend, from Friday July 5 to Saturday July 6.

Another solution to reduce the bill: refuel off the highways during your trip. The price of fuel is in fact much higher at motorway rest areas. The price difference is often greater than 10 cents and, for a 50 liter tank for example, the savings made are therefore not negligible. You can get out if you have spotted a cheap station nearby and then return to the highway so as not to waste time. Those in less of a hurry can even limit themselves to national roads and thus avoid tolls while benefiting from cheaper gasoline.
