Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Indonesia would not tolerate smuggled goods and cheap imported products that harm domestic production. This is not only an economic problem, but also directly linked to the survival of the industry.
According to Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, monitoring and measures against contraband and illegal products are not only carried out at major ports of entry, but also through clandestine smuggling.
The authorities, particularly customs and the General Directorate of Customs and Excise (DJBC), have been asked to strengthen control and strictly punish smuggling activities.
He noted that several regulations provide the greatest possible leeway for imported goods to freely enter the Indonesian market, which has hit the domestic industry hard.
According to DJBC, in the first 11 months of this year, Indonesia detected 31,275 cases of smuggling which caused an estimated loss of $246 million for the country. Clothing products in particular represent a large part of illegal imports, which seriously affects domestic textile and clothing companies. -VNA
