Tennis. Wimbledon (Q) – David Goffin: “I want my granddaughter to see me play…”

This Monday was special for David Goffin. For the first time since 2011, the Belgian took part in the qualifications of Wimbledon. 82nd in the world after his title at Ilkley Challengerthe one who celebrated his 33rd birthday last Monday was unable to enter the grand tableau cut of Wim‘on time and must therefore go through the very difficult qualifying test again’. In the first round, the former world number 7 secured against the Australian Marc Polmans, 6-3, 6-1. He will try to do as well on Wednesday against Yasutaka Uchiyama. “Whether you win in Masters 1000 or Challenger, it’s the same feeling”

Going through the qualifications is obviously special when you have experienced the highest level. But David Goffin remains overmotivated and has good reasons to be. “The main reason is that I’m going to be a dad in September. My wife and I are very happy, it’s obviously something very new. It’s going to be a little girl and I want to be able to show her what I’ve done, to so she can see me play live. I wanted to go further, work even harder, play a little longer, a few more years if I can stay in shape I’m sure the level is there.”

I have to say that ‘Le Goff’ just won the Ilkley Challengerenough to put a smile back on your face. “When you finish the week without losing, it’s something special. Whether it’s a Masters 1000 or a Challenger, it’s the same feeling. It was my first trophy on grass so it’s a real boost of confidence. I love Wimbledon, it’s the best tournament in the world and we want to do something big.”
