“Gas chamber for rent”. A new anti-Semitic tag was discovered on a door in the city center of Rouen, Friday November 15, 2024, rue du Petit-Salut, near the cathedral. Agents from the city's tag service came across it and the message was quickly deleted. The town hall plans to file a complaint.
If this event did not make much noise, Nicolas Zuili, local assistant in charge of the right bank districts, does not want to stop there. He made a rant on social networks by posting the photo and sending a “letter to the asshole, author of a tag found in Rouen”.
“For my part, this is the worst thing seen today in our public spaces since I was elected, and I am disgusted by it,” he is indignant on Facebook.
Reached by telephone, Nicolas Zuili wishes to denounce a “fed up” attitude among elected officials and citizens. “It’s despicable, we can’t let this kind of thing be said or take shape. It’s a negation of history!”
The elected official cannot help but make a link with the attack on the Rouen synagogue on May 17, 2024, when a man tried to burn it down. Intercepted by the police, a 28-year-old Algerian, the perpetrator, was shot dead.

In his Facebook post, Nicolas Zuili published an extract from a text by Hermann Strasfogel in 1944. “IThis is an extract from the only French letter exhibited at the Shoah Memorial from a French Jew who had been requisitioned by the German army to empty the gas chambers.”
“We must bang our fist on the table and respond to extremism with culture. In 2024, such an act can no longer happen”concludes the elected official.
