Two gold medals for Algeria

African Athletics Championships: Two gold medals for Algeria

Algeria opened its medal count at the 23rd African Athletics Championships by winning two gold charms and one bronze, Saturday in Douala (Cameroon) on the occasion of the 2nd day of competition.

The first to offer gold to Algeria, Zahra Tatar dominated the hammer throw competition with a throw of 67.81m. The 31-year-old thrower thus confirms her first continental title won last March in Accra (Ghana) during the 13th African Games.

Also present in this competition, Zouina Bouzebra settled for 5th place with a throw of 65.41m.

For his part, Larbi Bourrada proved for the umpteenth time that he was the undisputed King of the African decathlon. The native of Réghaïa, in the eastern suburbs of Algiers, won his 6th title with a total of 7,447 points, for what seems to be his last African games before taking a well-deserved retirement.

Even if Bourrada is going to hang up his crampons, there is no need to worry about the Algerian decathlon, because the next generation is already there. Indeed, Chérif Boudoumi is already following in the footsteps of his elder by taking second place on the podium.

After these first three consecrations, the Algerian harvest has a strong chance of growing in view of the program for the 3rd day of events, scheduled for this Sunday, during which five Algerians will be present in four finals.

Thus, there will be Abdelmalik Lahoulou at the start of the 400m hurdles final, just like Bilal Tabti and his friend Hichem Bouchicha in the 3000m steeplechase final. For their part, Hadil Rezik will compete in the high jump final, while Oussama Khennouci will also aim for the first step of the podium in the discus throw competition.
