Ukraine, according to the Times, could develop a rudimentary nuclear bomb within months if Donald Trump withdraws U.S. military aid, according to a briefing paper prepared for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
The country would quickly be able to build a basic plutonium-based device with technology similar to that of the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945, the report said. “Creating a simple atomic bomb, as the United States did in the Manhattan Project, would not be a difficult task 80 years later,” the document reads.
Lacking time to build and operate the large facilities needed to enrich uranium, wartime Ukraine would instead have to rely on the use of plutonium extracted from spent nuclear reactor fuel rods Ukrainians.
These atomic bombs would certainly be “low” in power but sufficiently destructive to cause a few hundred thousand deaths each time in a Russian city, even if the envisaged use would be on military targets. We are almost reassured.
