Among the winners, first-time novelist Steve Poutré won the prize in the novels and short stories category for his book Raw milkpublished by Alto. This novel, which evokes the author’s childhood on the family dairy farm, addresses mental illness and is inspired by the tragedies experienced by his family, such as the suicides of his grandfather, his aunt and his cousin .
Steve Poutré, professional graphic designer and self-taught, is already working on a second manuscript drawing inspiration from the same soil.
The other finalists in the category were big people by Mathieu Rolland (Boréal), The version that interests no one by Emmanuelle Pierrot (Le Quartanier), The account is good by Louis-Daniel Godin (La Peuplade), as well as Mute by Pascale Beauregard (Boréal).
In the essay category, Florence-Agathe Dubé-Moreau won the prize for her book Out of play : Cultural and feminist chronicle on the professional sports industry, published by Éditions du Stir-Mage.
This work addresses the place of women in sport, from players’ partners to referees and managers, from a feminist perspective, and marks a first victory for the publishing house at the Governor General’s Awards. Martine Delvaux was the external proofreader of this book.
Among the finalists were File a complaint by Léa Clermont-Dion (The August Horse) and Satin black by Stanley Péan (Boréal).
In poetry, it is Degenerate poem by Névé Dumas (The Goose of Cravan) who was rewarded. In theater, Wollstonecraft by Sarah Berthiaume (Ta Mère) won the prize. For children’s literature, Stéfani Meunier won in the text category for A bubble outside of time (Leméac). In the category of illustrated children’s books, The first Christmas treewritten by Innu author Ovila Fontaine and illustrated by Charlotte Parent (La Pastèque), was distinguished. This work is being translated into Innu for use as a teaching tool in schools, and it has also been published in Russian.
For the translation category, Éric Fontaine won the prize for the French version of Restigouche: The long course of the wild river by Philip Lee, published by Boréal.
