PSG’s summer transfer window was initiated by a recruitment that no one saw coming: the transfer of goalkeeper Matvey Safonov for €20 million. Trained in Krasnodar, the new PSG goalkeeper has already had his chance four times, but would not have convinced Luis Enrique, far from it. To the point where the transalpine press evokes a clap of thunder.
Matvey Safonov (25 years old) was the big surprise at the start of the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old Russian doorman who has only known Krasnodar since his training made the big leap by leaving the Russian championship for the Ligue 1. Recruited for a check for around €20M, Safonov had come to be more than just an understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG surprised everyone with Matvey Safonov
According to information communicated by The Team following the announcement of the recruitment of Matvey Safonov, Luis Enrique would have reshuffled the cards internally regarding the hierarchy of goalkeepers. Gianluigi Donnarumma was going to be competed by Safonov et Arnau Tenas in training sessions and for the starting eleven. Matvey Safonov already has four appearances in the jersey of PSG since the start of the season including one in Champions League facing Gérone last September (1-0).
Safonov no longer pleases Enrique, a new transfer in sight to PSG?
However, Luis Enrique would not see in Matvey Safonov the ideal solution to put pressure on Gianluigi Donnarumma for the sake of competition according to Tuttosport. The PSG coach would have some reservations about the Russian’s profile. If ever Donnarumma continued to disappoint during major events, the recruitment of a new goalkeeper could not be ruled out during the next transfer window.
